Message: Dealing with Anger -various Scriptures
I. The Problem of Anger
James 1:19–20 “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires”
II. Understanding Anger
A. Anger as a physical response -Proverbs 29:22 “An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.” 2 Kings 5:11-12 “But Naaman went away angry and said, ‘I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?’ So, he turned and went off in a rage.” 1 Samuel 18:7-12 “As they danced, they sang: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.’ Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him.…James 1:19–20Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had left Saul.”
C. Righteous anger Ephesians 4:26 “In your anger do not sin.”
1) God Psalm 7:11 “God is a righteous judge, He expresses his wrath every day.”
2) Moses, David Exodus 32:19; 1 Samuel 17:26
D. Sinful anger Proverbs 29:22 “An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.”
1) explosive anger – quick flare/intimidation -Proverbs 29:11: “
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.”
2) nurtured anger – slow burn/resentment -1 Kings 21:4 “So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat.”
3) buried anger – time-bomb/denial Proverbs 28:13 “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” Prov. 29:22 “An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.”
III. Dealing with anger
A. How you express anger is a learned response
B. How you express anger is a chosen response James 1:19 “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Proverbs 13:3 says: “He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.” Proverbs 29:20 “Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”
Psalm 103:8: “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.”
Proverbs 19:11 says: “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.” Ecclesiastes 7:9 “Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.”
C. How to express anger as a godly response
1) Ask for God’s help 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
2) Recognize early -Proverbs 17:27 says: “A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered.”
3) Resolve quickly -Eph. 4:26–27). There’s an old Latin proverb based on this verse that says: “He who goes angry to bed has the devil for a bedfellow.”
4) Practice forgiveness -Ephesians 4:31-32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you”
5) The fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23 “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
CONCLUSION:
1. Ask for God’s help.
2. Recognize anger early.
3. Resolve anger quickly.
4. Practice forgiveness.
5. And ask God to develop the fruit of the Spirit in you.
