Singing Your Way to Worship

Mar 28
3 min read

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, and we will be studying from Psalm 134, the final psalm in the Psalms of Ascent (120–134).  They are 15 "songs of pilgrimage" used by worshippers travelling to Jerusalem, highlighting themes of trust, security, and joy in God. Key verses emphasize God as the protector (Psalm 121), the joy of worship (Psalm 122), and dependence on His blessing (Psalm 127), reflecting a journey from distress toward peace.

Here are some Key Verses that were sung by the pilgrims in the Psalms of Ascent as they travelled to Passover in the days of the Bible:

  • Psalm 121:1–2 (Trust): "I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth."

  • Psalm 121:7–8 (Protection): "The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore."

  • Psalm 122:1 (Joy in Worship): "I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the LORD!'"

  • Psalm 125:1 (Security): "Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever."

  • Psalm 126:5 (Hope): "Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy."

  • Psalm 127:1 (Dependence): "Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain."

  • Psalm 130:5 (Waiting): "I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope."

  • Psalm 131:2 (Humility): "But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother."

  • Psalm 133:1 (Unity): "How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!"

The conclusion of the Psalms of Ascent is Psalm 134, but you will have to wait until Palm Sunday to discover more about the final song they sang as they arrived at the temple in Jerusalem, which was on Mount Zion.   You will rejoice to discover what Jesus and the disciples were singing as they came through the gates of the city.

Go ahead an read the psalm, if you wish.  It will prepare your heart for the Palm Sunday message.

Lord, prepare our hearts for our march into Zion, City of our God! Help us to sing a joyful HOSANA and learn the joy of worship with the psalms that saints of all ages have used. Give us the anticipation of waving our hands in praise, just like the little children learned to do so long ago.  Please bless us so that we can be a blessing to others. In Jesus name we pray! AMEN!

Blessed to be a  blessing,

 Pastor Ken
