Bible love stories

Love is one of the central themes in the Bible. From the first chapters of Genesis to the concluding verses of Revelation, God’s love for humanity, as well as the love between individuals, is highlighted throughout the Scriptures. The Bible presents love not just as an emotion but as an action and a commitment.

The Bible speaks about love in various forms, from the unconditional love of God to the romantic love between spouses. When it comes to married love, the Bible emphasizes the sacredness, beauty, and the purpose of physical intimacy within the marriage relationship. The love between a husband and wife is seen as mutual submission, respect, affection, and unity, designed by God to deepen their bond and reflect His love for the Church.

Of all the books of the Bible, the Song of Solomon is the most romantic. Here are some snippets from Solomon:

1. Song of Solomon 4:9-10 “You have captured my heart, my sister, my bride; you have captured my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much more pleasing is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume more than any spice!”

In the Song of Solomon, the beauty of romantic love and physical affection between a husband and wife is celebrated. These verses highlight the deep emotional connection that underpins physical intimacy.

2. Song of Solomon 7:6-9 “How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much more pleasing is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume more than any spice! Your stature is like that of the palm, and your breasts are like clusters of fruit. I said, ‘I will climb the palm tree; I will take hold of its fruit.'”

These verses continue the poetic and passionate celebration of the love between a husband and wife, emphasizing the beauty of physical affection.

3. Song of Solomon 2:16 “My beloved is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies.”

This verse symbolizes the mutual belonging and connection that is central to the marriage relationship, including the intimacy shared between husband and wife.

4. Song of Solomon 1:2 “Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.”

This verse continues the metaphorical depiction of love-making as a garden, a place of beauty and pleasure shared between the husband and wife.

5. Song of Solomon 7:10 “I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me.”

This verse captures the mutual desire and affection shared between a husband and wife, highlighting the emotional and physical aspects of  being in love.

The patriarchs love stories teach us various aspects of love early in the Bible.

A. The story of Abraham and Sarah: A love that waited on God

The account of Abraham and Sarah is a good example of biblical love stories. Abraham is commonly called the father of faith, for he obeyed God and left his native land for a promised land (which we know is Canaan).

Despite their fame, they had their fair share of bad times. Just after calling him, God promised to give them a child.

Genesis 15:4-6

4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

The promise did not come to be as soon as they had expected. They had to wait on God for many years. In that time, they had their seasons of lack of faith and even attempted to “help” God. This resulted in the birth of Ishmael through Hagar. 25 years later, they held Isaac, the child of promise, in their hands. At that time, Sarah was 90, and Abraham was 100 years old!

Genesis 21:1-3

The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised. 2 And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.

Despite their old age and Sarah being barren, the promise came to fruition. From a human perspective, it was late, but God’s timing is beautifully perfect. Their journey reminds us that God is faithful even when the wait feels endless and hopeless.

Never give up on God. His promises may tarry, but they always come to pass. And when it comes, it will be so good that it will leave you in awe.

B. The story of Jacob and Rachel: A patient, enduring love

Jacob’s love for Rachel is among the favorite Bible stories for many.

Jacob stole his elder brother Esau’s birthright, making his stay with his family in Canaan untenable. He is forced to go on a run ended up in the household of his uncle Laban in Paddan-Aram. Laban receives him, and the young man settles in. Soon afterward, he fell in love with Rachel, Laban’s younger daughter.

He offered to work for Laban for 7 years in exchange for Rachel’s hand in marriage. Laban obliged. enesis 29:16-18

16 Now Laban had two daughters. The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. 18 Jacob loved Rachel. And he said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”

However, on the wedding night, Laban shortchanged him. He gave him Leah, Rachel’s older sister, not Rachel, arguing that a younger girl cannot marry before the firstborn in that cultural context. Unhinged, he worked for another 7 years to get Rachel.

So, in total, he worked 14 years to get Rachel!

Jacob’s story teaches that true love is patient and always willing to wait and sacrifice. If it comes easy, you might take it for granted. Easy come, easy go, the idiom goes.

Moreover, real love is persistent and resilient, even in disappointment. Though every romantic relationship comes with a deep connection, it is not devoid of challenges. So, the importance of endurance and mutual respect cannot be overstated.

Jacob’s dedication also reflects God’s enduring love for us—steadfast, patient, and unwavering. In a world that often seeks quick results, Jacob’s story is a reminder that the most meaningful things are worth the wait.

C. Isaac and Rebekah: A match made in heaven

The list of Biblical couples cannot be complete without talking about Isaac and his wife, Rebekah. We can draw many bible lessons from their love story, especially dating lessons.

How they came together is nothing short of a miracle. Abraham instructed his servant Eliezer to travel to Mesopotamia and get his son Isaac a wife from among his family. When he got there, he made a pact with God. The woman who agrees to water his animal be the one God has chosen for his master’s son.

Before he had even finished speaking, Rebekah came and did just that. It turns out that Rebekah was the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Nahor, and Abraham’s brother. He was in the right place.

Eliezer negotiated and soon he was on the way back with Rebekah. Isaac accepted her wholeheartedly and took her in as his wife.

Genesis 24:67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

We learn that God works out His plan for marriages in wonderful ways.

4. The story of Ruth and Boaz: the quintessential loyal love

When preachers want to give biblical lessons on loyalty, many use Ruth’s loyalty as an illustration, for good reasons.

The book of Ruth starts with an Israeli man, Elimelech, migrating his wife, Naomi, and two sons from Bethlehem to Moab to escape famine. They settled therein and the sons married Moabite women. Life would take a dark turn. Elimelech and his two sons die, leaving Naomi and the two daughters all alone.

Having had enough of Moab, Naomi opted to return to her people in Bethlehem. She asks her daughters-in-law to go back to their families and possibly remarry. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye and went on her way, but Ruth clung to Naomi, saying the famous words:

Ruth 1:16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”

Talk of loyalty.

Seeing her determination, Naomi takes Ruth back to her people in Bethlehem. In Bethlehem, Ruth meets a prominent man called Boaz, settles down, and bears a son named Obed, who becomes David’s grandfather. With that, she got a place in Jesus’ genealogy. Ruth and Boaz’s story is one of hope and restoration, a reminder of God’s goodness.

Dear Lord, Valentine's Day is just ahead. Love is in the air. May we learn from your Word and from the examples of godly men and women of the Bible. Help us to love as you love us. Bless us with loving relationships in our homes and in our world. In Jesus' name. Amen!

Lovingly yours,

Pastor Ken
